2019 Easter Bombings

The attacks targeted three churches and four luxury hotels in near-simultaneous explosions. (The churches: St. Anthony's Shrine in Colombo, St. Sebastian's Church in Negombo, and Zion Evangelical Church in Batticaloa.)

Carried out by nine Sri Lankan suicide bombers who pledged allegiance to ISIS. The death toll varied significantly: an initial figure of 359 was announced, later revised down to 253 after it was determined that some bodies had been counted twice by the Ministry of Health, before stabilizing at approximately 269. In 2024, a woman injured in the St. Sebastian's Church bombing died from her wounds, raising the final toll to 270. More than 500 were injured. Among the victims were at least 45 foreigners, including five Americans. An intelligence warning ten days before the attack had not been acted upon with sufficient urgency.
